14” x 18” Acrylic on canvas

One of the many things I love about the west coast is our rich and colourful history. I’ve always enjoyed reading stories of the old days, stories of the hardworking homesteaders who carved a life out of the rainforest in some of the most remote inlets. Stories of the high riggers climbing to the tops of the tallest trees and the hand loggers who built railroads to get their huge logs down to the salt chuck. Or when the fishing industry was booming and how exciting it would have been making a living on the water.

Our straits, islands, and inlets were bustling with activity as there were many villages, logging camps and floating settlements all up and down the BC coast. Sadly many of them have been deserted and have been reclaimed by the rainforest with barely a trace of their history. The remaining cities, towns and villages many people forget, began as fishing hubs or logging camps, which is hard to imagine by the sight of them today.

This painting developed on a recent prawn fishing trip. What I liked most this scene was the colours of spring on the coast, the dark moody rain clouds with patches of blue sky and sunlight closeby lighting up a stand of cedars on the hillside. What I love most about this scene is that even though much has changed on our beloved coast, some things remain the same. The spirit of the west coast is still alive and if you look hard enough you’ll still find scenes like this tug, Pacific Fury, towing log booms to Vancouver the same was it was done 100 years ago .
