Oly's Fuel Shed
Oly's Fuel Shed
9” x 12” Acrylic on canvas
I’ve been wanting to put together a series of paintings that reflect some of the many things I love about coastal living. This series is mostly focussed on Port Neville inlet and our old family homestead.
In 1935 Karen Hansen began a fuel dock at Port Neville for Standard Oil which her brother Oly Hansen operated until 1965 serving fishermen and boaters from all over. Sometime later on it was skidded off the dock, up the beach, and plunked beside Oly’s log house to use as a tool shed where it still remains today.
The well-used Standard Oil shed now spends its retirement in the shade of a large cedar which threatens to swallow it whole, with lichen like ancient cobwebs swaying in the constant breeze.
For 31 years I’ve seen this scene exactly the same way , after all this time the shed is almost as much a part of the landscape as the cedar itself.
