Port Neville Waiting Out The Storm
Port Neville Waiting Out The Storm
14x18 acrylic on canvas
When my great-great grandfather Hans Hansen rowed up the coast from Vancouver with one hand in the late 1800’s he reached a favourable spot and decided to stay. He hand logged the area, built a home, a store, set up a post office and raised a family. As the family began to grow, they had a small farm, and my great grandfather Olaf Hansen (whom my son is named after) continued to work the land and become a very well known and dependable figure on the coast for the rest of his life.
As I wander the property, my great-great grandfather’s store still stands, my great grandfather’s log home, his barn, and various tools, fishing and farm equipment strewn about have become as much a part of the landscape as the trees themselves. I enjoy walking and working the land my ancestors walked and worked, and dream of bringing life back into our beloved family homestead.
While much has changed at Port Neville over the years, much has remained the same. Port Neville has always been a refuge for fishermen and all sea faring folks from the sudden gales of Johnstone Straits.
I’ve depicted a nasty north easter passing through in spring while two local crab boats wait out the storm.
