Gulls at Point Holmes
Gulls at Point Holmes
Limited Edition
The beautiful Point Holmes is a special place to many people. Located on the east coast of the island in the town of Comox is this rocky beach that juts out into the Salish sea to take the brunt of it's winter storms.
As a youngster I remember how the car would shake as we would storm watch from the parking lot, boy, those windshield wipers could hardly keep up with the relentless sea spray. I also remember how my mother would bring us to watch my dad and grandfather fish herring, and how the waters would come alive with the arrival of herring. It is also a calming and peaceful place to those looking to unwind after a long day. Point holmes has a rich ecosystem teeming with life. They say that when the tide is low the table is set and is that ever evident as hundreds of gulls, herons, eagles, waterfowl, seals and sea lions can be seen feeding.
What inspired me to paint this scene was the clouds, I liked how they change colour from the warm glow of the sun to the cool clouds of the approaching storm and the backlit gulls sunning themselves in the last sunbeams before the southeaster hits.
